Eleanor K. Gustafson has been publishing both fiction and nonfiction since 1978. Her short stories and articles appeared in a number of national and local magazines. “The Stones” is her fourth novel. In many of her stories, Eleanor explores the cosmic struggle between good and evil in light of God’s overarching work of redemption. A graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, she has been actively involved in church life as a minister’s wife, teacher, musician, writer, and encourager. The drive persisted, though, and my first essay was accepted for publication in 1978. With a few more such successes, I took a big breath and decided to try a novel. “Appalachian Spring” came out in 1987 and was loosely based on one of my earlier writing experiments. I knew gardening, I knew tree farming, I knew the Bible, and these became threads with which I wove “Wild Harvest”. “Middle Night” was a horse of a different color. Hardly anyone liked it, but I believed in it enough to self-publish. It is dark and grim in many ways but is a powerful dramatization of sin and redemption and grace - all without any religious terminology. My life has been full and rich, a grand mix of tears and laughter.

Haverhill Woman Pens Religious Book

By Yadira Betances
ybetances @ eagletribune.com

Eagle Tribune - Haverhill, MA - As a youngster, every time Eleanor Gustafson read a book, she wanted to finish the story by going off into the woods or fields to live with the characters.

After college, marriage and raising three children, her love of writing was rekindled. She published her first essay in 1978, and 31 years later has released her fourth novel, "The Stones," based on the story of King David. The book published by Whitaker House, takes readers behind the scene of David's life, from the teenager who collects stone to defeat the giant Goliath, to his affair with Bath-Sheba and the birth of their son, and his growth in God through poetry and music, to his death. David is credited with writing 73 psalms of prayers and thanksgiving found in the Bible.

"I've always been interested in David's story because it's almost complete. It has high drama, adventure, complex characters, romance and tragedy," said Gustafson, 75. "But it is lacking a certain dimension and I wanted to make it come alive for the average reader." Gustafson said some of the characters are mentioned only by name, and she wanted to give them a personality.

"They are part of a cast of thousands in the Bible. I pick out people who have an impact on the outcome of David's story to build the climax of the story," she said. "I wanted to make it true to scripture, what they were like, how they lived. He is the key to the kingdom and the messianic thread linking him with the messiah Jesus."

She also chose David's stories because it offers a lot of material for devotion, including his loyalty to God and to King Saul, "I wanted people to see his passion for God in action and take some of that passion into themselves," she said. "He knew the fear of God, something that we're not comfortable with. David knew that God is loving, graceful and merciful, but should not to be trifled with. "Along with the fear of God should go the grace of God and the love of God. David experienced all of these and had a full-orbed understanding of who God was," she said.

In addition to "The Stones," Gustafson has written, "Appalachian Spring" published in 1987 and based loosely on one of her earlier experiences. "I chose West Virginia as the setting because it best suited my need for a "mountain man." We did travel down there just to look around and try to get a feel of the place, but that's the extent of my "experience," she said.

She also wrote, "Wild Harvest," which weaves her interests on gardening, tree farming and the Bible; "Middle Night" set in pre-industrial period excludes known religions and focuses on sin, redemption and grace.

Born in Branchville, N.J., she recalls growing up roaming the hilly little town on foot and on horseback.

She received a degree in church music from Wheaton College. She and her husband, the Rev. Jim Gustafson moved to Haverhill in 1959, when he became pastor of West Congregational Church. He teaches world religions and philosophy online at Northern Essex Community College and world religion to seniors at Bradford Christian Academy also through the Internet. The Gustafson, who have been married for 53 years, have three grown children and eight grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys doing Sudoku puzzles, and gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers. The Gustafsons own a 250-acre tree farm in Chester, Vt. Their son is building a timber-frame house on the property from trees they have grown. The family was named Vermont Tree Farmers of the Year in 1997.
